DEA agent shoots suspect dead during cocaine bust in Chicago
An unidentified man was shot dead by an agent of the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) during a cocaine bust in Chicago on June 2, 2018, after the suspect purportedly hit the officer with his vehicle. The incident took place when DEA agents were investigating the “multiple-kilogram cocaine distribution point” on the 700 block of South Central near the Eisenhower Expressway, authorities said.
According to a DEA spokesperson, a police car tried to stop the suspect about 8:45 a.m., but he escaped. The officers then made their second attempt during a stop on South Central Avenue, just south of the Interstate 290 overpass. But the man turned his vehicle toward the DEA agent and hit him. To safeguard himself, the agent reportedly fired a bullet at the man, who died on the spot. The agent suffered injuries and was also hospitalized for treatment. On conducting a search of the suspect’s vehicle, the officials found a significant amount of cocaine.
Drug abuse rampant in Chicago
The problem of drug abuse is severely affecting people residing in various parts of Illinois, especially Chicago. According to media reports, around 1,500 people died from drug overdoses in Chicago and the suburbs during 2017. The number is significantly greater than the total number of people killed by gunshots in Chicago during the same period.
In the U.S., the problem of drug abuse is not limited to one city or state. According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH), approximately 28.6 million Americans aged 12 or older were current users of illicit drugs in that year. Besides, the NSDUH data shows that around 1.9 million people above 12 years of age were current users of cocaine.
People use cocaine by snorting, injecting into the bloodstream, or smoking to produce vapors. Cocaine is a highly addictive stimulant that can cause a range of side effects. The drug increases levels of dopamine in brain circuits that control pleasure and movement. This flood of dopamine hampers normal brain communication and causes euphoric high. A person can overdose on cocaine, which may lead to death. Therefore, the need of the hour is to spread awareness and help people know about the dangers associated with drug abuse so that they begin a healthy life.
